No sooner had the new Elmbridge Liberal Democrat coalition got into office than Surrey announced in was to cut funding – in-year – to social services. Elmbridge has a long record of supplying a higher level social care for the elderly than other parts of the country and this is because Elmbridge provides many services directly.
Fortunately, despite these Surrey cuts Elmbridge has been able to maintain the services almost intact. This is because of good husbandry by the previous Conservative administration in Elmbridge – credit where it is due – and the flexibility and imagination of Elmbridge staff.
It might be time to consider radical new ways to provide services for the elderly in the near future. The last thing we want to do is to slowly salami-slice funding of the present arrangements.
