Surrey County Council has now confirmed that the planned Weybridge town centre roadworks, scheduled to begin in January 2027, have been cancelled.
While investment in infrastructure is important, this scheme would have resulted in major disruption to the town high street for many months. Local businesses raised concerns about the impact on trade and risks to their livelihoods, while residents expressed worries about access to services and their ability to travel to and around the town.
Surrey County Council made it clear that the scheme could not be substantially modified or reduced in scale to address the concerns raised by the many stakeholders involved, which included the local businesses and resident groups.
When the new Lib Dem-run East Surrey Council inherits these responsibilities next April, we will do things differently, with meaningful engagement with residents and businesses from the outset.
We are pleased that other helpful and proportionate road safety improvements in Weybridge continue as planned, including the new pedestrian crossings near Weybridge station and 20mph measures near schools.
These schemes, which we have been campaigning for, respond directly to concerns raised by local people and demonstrate the value of working collaboratively with communities to deliver positive change.
