Planning appeal upheld: St Catherine’s, Thames Street/Beales Lane

St Catherine’s, Thames Street: application 2019/0386

PA Housing, who administer the majority of social housing in Elmbridge, made an application last year to demolish the two storey, brick built St Catherine’s House on the corner of Beales Lane and Thames Street and replace it with a part two and part three-storey building for 28 residential dwellings: 9 x 1 bed, 13 x 2 bed and 6 x 3 bed units.

The Area Planning Sub-Committee refused the application on the grounds that its height and mass would harm the character and appearance of the area as well as its adverse effect on traffic flow and increase to parking stress. There were also concerns on overlooking and loss of privacy to houses opposite on Beales Lane. The developer appealed and the Planning Inspector arranged a hearing at which all parties could express their views. The Inspector also visited the site and the surrounding area.

After quite a long wait, we were informed that the appeal was allowed and planning consent given.

  1. Are there plans to provide excellent cycling and walking infrastructure? This site is perfectly located for a Low Traffic Neighbourhood and car free zones. A car share point eg CoCars and Cobikes would be a great addition. The river and canal paths are an excellent travel link, it just needs access to it improved to make the journey seamlessly safe.
I’d like to suggest planners look at the history of the Span Housing developments in Weybridge as they were intended 50years ago, not cluttered with cars as they are now. ( Brackley and Templemere) The ethos is even more relevant today re: net zero, active travel and historical relevance, and was a wonderful place for families and individuals to grow up and live.

    • Thank you Georgia,
There was a meeting in the Civic Centre yesterday of Borough and Surrey County councillors to present information from a contractor on their Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). So the provision of better active travel links by bike or on foot is being investigated.
I have lived in a Span development in Weybridge for over twenty years – my wife and I were won over by the communal green space and play area which was a wonderful environment in which to bring up our children.
      Regards,
      Ashley

  2. Morning
Weybridge can not sustain the amount of domestic building that is on going for the last several years
Please reconsider the above development and decided to decline permission to
    Build
The traffic on Thames street is already huge especially around the early mornings and evenings due to pick up and drop offs at St Georges school
Can we not have more of the facilities that are so desperately need in this area,
Ie schools and medical areas. Looking after the inhabitants that we already have
It will not be long before nobody wants to live here and all your New Builds will stand empty.
    Thank you
